How to apply for PAN Card online


PAN refers to Permanent Account Number and it is a 10 digit Alphanumeric number issued by Income Tax Department. In a layman's term, it is an account to track all your Income tax receipts and payments. Income Tax Department recently revolutionize the mode of application for PAN and now you can apply for PAN directly from your home and you need not send any documents in physical form. Income Tax department has authorized following 2 platforms where online application can be made -


NSDL Website and
UTIITSL Website 

On both of these platforms, one can apply for the new PAN card or apply for the correction in the existing PAN details. Further, one can make the request for issue of duplicate PAN card. Here are the steps to be followed for online application of PAN -

Step 1 - Don't worry if you do not have Aadhaar or Digital Signature Certificate (DSC)?

Even if you don't have Aadhaar or DSC, you can apply online. Basic difference in applying with Aadhaar number or DSC is that after application process you are not required to send the copy of documents to NSDL or UTIITSL in physical form. Please select category as an Individual if you are applying for yourself or any other guy and fill up the other details as required in respective fields.

Step 2 - Read the Instructions

Step 3 - Mode of Payment 

The charges for applying for PAN is ₹110/- (including GST) for Indian communication address and ₹1020/- (including GST) for foreign communication address. you may be charged additional fees for using e-sign facility for verification Aadhaar or DSC. In addition to that your bank may charge any additional fees and you must check with your bank before applying. Payment can be made online through Credit/Debit Card or Net banking. If you wish to make the payment through Demand draft, you can do so. DD should be drawn in the name of 'NSDL-PAN' payable at Mumbai. On successful payment, acknowledgement number will be displayed. You must save the acknowledgement number for future reference.

Step 4 - Completion

If you have opted for Aadhaar based or DSC based application at start then you need not dispatch the copy of documents to NSDL or UTIITSL. However, if you do not have verified Aadhaar and you have finished your Form 49A then you must dispatch the copy of ID and address proof to NSDL/UTIITSL. For NSDL, documents must be forwarded to this address -

‘INCOME TAX PAN SERVICES UNIT (Managed by NSDL e-Governance Infrastructure Limited)’ at 5th Floor Mantri Sterling, Plot No. 341, Survey No. 997/8, Model Colony, Near Deep Bungalow Chowk, Pune-411 016.

If you are looking for change/ corrections in existing PAN Card then you should follow the following steps -

Step 1 - Fill the online application at the following URL and select change or correction in existing PAN card for drop down menu in 'Applicant Type'. 

Step 2 -  Read the instructions at https://www.tin-nsdl.com/services/pan/instructions-change.html for filling up the form.

Step 3 - Follow the above mentioned step 3 for making the payment and charges are same for new and duplicate pan card.

Step 4 - If you have verified your Aadhaar number then you need not send your documents to NSDL but if you have not done so then please send copy of your documents to above mentioned address via courier/post. Please note that your application without Aadhaar will be processed only after NSDL receives your copy of documents. Documents sent should support the changes applied for in PAN for e.g. Request for change in applicant’s or father’s name will have to be supported with such proof that will contain proof of change of name from the old to the new in addition to the proof of identity. The documents that shall be accepted as proof in this case are:
  • For married ladies – change of name on account of marriage – marriage certificate, marriage invitation card, publication of ‘name-change’ in gazette, a certificate from a gazetted officer stating name change, copy of passport showing husband’s name.
  • For individual applicants other than married ladies – publication of    `name-change’ in gazette, a certificate from a gazetted officer stating name change.
  • For companies – ROC’s certificate for name change.
  • For partnership firms – revised Partnership Deed
  • For other categories which are registered organisations (AOP/Trust/BOI/AJP, etc.) – the revised registration/deed/agreement.

Important check points while filling form - 

  1. No initials/abbreviations to be used in name/father’s name (except for Middle name).
  2. No prefixes such as Dr, Col, Major, etc. should be mentioned in ‘Name’, father’s name and‘Name to be printed on card’ fields.
  3. Representative Assessee (RA) details mandatory for minor/lunatic/idiot/deceased cases.
  4. POI, POA and PODB should indicate exactly the same name as mentioned in the application.

Use 15-digit acknowledgement number for tracking the status of application (as provided above), as under:
